I stumbled across the clothing brand Finisterre six years ago whilst on a break in Cornwall, drawn initially by the name. My family are from Galicia, on the north-west coast of Spain, just an hour from the fishing port of Finisterre - or in Galician, Fisterra.

The name, from the Latin finis terrae, means ‘end of the earth’ or ‘land’s end’, aptly describing the rugged, gale-blasted Iberian peninsula - and is a former area term used by the British Shipping Forecast, an early warning system for sea captains.

As a teenager, every year I enjoyed spearfishing in the cold Atlantic, and my family still own the home on its shores, passed down by my maternal grandparents. The picturesque similarities between Celtic Galicia and Cornwall, both with no shortage of wind and rain, means I treasure my trips to the Cornish coast.

After discovering the Finisterre store outside Padstow, I bought my first garment. Admiring the understated style of the identity and clothing, and impressed with its quality, I looked deeper into the company’s story. Finisterre is more than just a surf and activewear brand. Their longstanding partnership with the RNLI, born from a shared respect for the ocean, inspired me further due to my connection with family members working out at sea, and unfortunately some I had lost. The company’s founder, Tom Kay, has been a lifeboat volunteer for 20 years, and a percentage of every sale from their collection goes to support the work of the lifesaving charity.

To this day, I follow the brand closely, and when in need of a new garment, always return to Finisterre.
