Ibiza, famed as an escapist retreat, and honoured with UNESCO World Heritage status, is often known as ‘l’illa blanca’ - the white island - a reference to its traditionally whitewashed architecture, as described in 1913 by artist, writer and aesthete Santiago Rusiñol, a founder of the Catalan modernisme movement.

Buildings on Ibiza are typically characterised by modular cubic structures painted with quicklime, forming an intrinsic part of the Balearic landscape. The simplicity of the style charmed and fascinated immigrant architects such as Erwin Broner and Rolph Blakstad in the 1950s, who fell in love with the island and combined its artisanal building principles with their own work.

Both explored the interplay of form, functionality and the living environment in their iconic designs - a custom continued by the Blakstad family, and other contemporary Ibizan architectural practices.

One such is Framework Studio, whose methodology draws upon the character, history and geographical traits of each site. Rather then focusing on a signature architectural style, Framework follow an intuitive process. Each space is considered as a place for questions to be asked and for dreams to materialise.

Can Brut is a residential family villa designed by the studio, set in 85,000 square metres of verdant land overlooking a secluded cove. For an ultimate sense of tranquility, the sharp cubic lines of the building are counterbalanced with the natural warmth of its tessellated stonework facades, winding garden walls, and sleek, limestone-clad poolside terrace. Fluid sculptural interior features and furnishings soothe and elevate the eye. Handcrafted wooden furniture, vintage pieces, and distinctive wall art add texture to a minimalist aesthetic.

Framework Studio’s philosophy of redefining imperfection means that the nuances and unique qualities of surfaces and structures hold court and express an opulence most elegantly dictated by nature and its materials.
